With a lyrics by Susan Birkenhead (Jelly’s Last Jam), a book by Bob Martin and direction and choreography by Casey Nicholaw (both of The Drowsy Chaperone), Strouse’s new musical, Minsky’s, will play The Ahmanson in Los Angeles January 21 - March 1, 2009. Minsky’s is a big, racy, new musical comedy set in the Prohibition Era New York City, recalling the free-spirited time of early showbiz comedians, con men, sexy chorus girls, hot music and dancing.

Reopening the renovated Eisenhower Theater, "Broadway: Three Generations" is a three-act evening featuring condensed versions of Girl Crazy, Strouse's Bye Bye Birdie and Side Show. Directed by Lonny Price, the evening tracked the development of the Broadway musical over three overlapping generations of composers. BBC Concert: Charles Strouse’s UK Birthday celebration

The Mermaid Theatre, Puddle Dock, Blackfriars, London, EC4V 3DB UK

This live concert featuring Paul Nicholas (Barnum, Charlie Girl), Bonnie Langford (Chicago, Sweet Charity), Rosemary Ashe (Mary Poppins, Phantom of the Opera) and Jacinta Whyte (My Left Foot) and Martin Yates conducting the BBC Concert Orchestra, celebrated the music of Charles Strouse. The New York Post's Michael Riedel and Susan Haskins sat down with Charles Strouse to discuss his 50 year career composing for the theatre as well as his new memoir, Put On A Happy Face. In this first part of a two part interview, Strouse performed "Put on a Happy Face" from his breakthrough hit Bye Bye Birdie, and the beautiful "I Want to Be With You" from Golden Boy. He also plays and sings some of the earlier, lesser known tunes that helped establish him as one of the most prolific and successful songwriters in the history of the musical theater.

An Evening With Charles Strouse Hosted by In The Heights' Lin-Manuel Miranda

The Drama Bookshop, 250 West 40th Street, New York

Audience Rewards and The Drama Bookshop hosted an exclusive discussion and book signing with Charles Strouse, with very special guest interviewer Lin-Manuel Miranda, at 5:00PM, Friday, September 5th, at the Drama Bookshop. The Tony-winning songwriter Miranda, lead an hour-long discussion with the three-time Tony-winning songwriter Charles Strouse, composer of American classics such as Annie and Bye Bye Birdie. Miranda focused the discussion on Strouse’s career and new book Put on a Happy Face: A Broadway Memoir. The discussion was followed by a book signing.


When interviewing Strouse before an audience at The Drama Bookshop, Miranda mentioned that one of his earliest theatre experiences was playing the title role in a school production of Bye Bye Birdie. When he mentioned that he was impressed with Strouse's use of Latin rhythms in "A Lot of Livin' To Do," it inspired an impromptu performance of the song by the two Tony Award winning composers.

42nd Street Moon presents “You’ve Got Possibilities: Celebrating Musicals of the 60’s”

42nd Street Moon began its 16th season of uncommon musicals with a gala concert celebrating the great musicals of the 1960s. The evening included a special 80th birthday salute to Strouse. In addition to Charles Strouse, special guest stars included alumni from Strouse musicals Andrea McArdle (Annie), Leland Palmer (Applause) and Susan Watson (Bye Bye Birdie). Applause, Applause: A Salute to Charles Strouse

The Paley Center for Media, New York

The Paley Center presented rare television and film footage featuring Lauren Bacall, Dick Van Dyke, Lee Adams, Chita Rivera, Leslie Uggams, Warren Beatty, Caroll O’Connor, Jean Stapleton, Dorothy Louden, Judy Kuhn and even the Muppets performing Charles Strouse songs from his Broadway shows, film and television. This public event, included a panel discussion, a live performance by Strouse and a live appearance by Andrea McArdle, the Tony Award nominated star of Strouse’s Annie. After the tribute, there was a dinner reception for Strouse and the Paley Center’s Producers Circle.

Library of Congress Honors Charles Strouse

Following acquisitions from great American composers including Richard Rodgers, Irving Berlin and Aaron Copeland, the Music Division of The Library of Congress accepted the Charles Strouse collection of original theatre, film, television, opera and orchestral work manuscripts. The presentation followed a birthday luncheon in the library.

At the Alzheimer's Association's 16th annual "A Night at Sardi's" fundraiser and awards dinner, stars performed selections from Strouse’s hit Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie. Directed by Jason Alexander, attending talent included Kristen Bell, Michael Chiklis, Victor garber, Neil Patrick Harris, Sam Harris, David E. Kelley, Angela Lansbury, John Larroquette, William Shatnet, James Spader, Lea Thompson, Steven Weber, Vanessa Wiliiams and Adam Wylie. At the event Strouse took to the piano to accompany the star of Birdie’s original Broadway production and film, Dick Van Dyke, in a performance of “Put on a Happy Face.” (See video)

Tony Award-winner Christine Ebersole (Grey Gardens) will star as Margo Channing in Applause, the 1970 Tony Award-winning musical based on the classic film All About Eve, about a great Broadway star and her duplicitous understudy. Tony Award winner Kathleen Marshall directs and choreographs. Songs include “Applause,” “Welcome to the Theater” and “Good Friends.” Following the matinee on Saturday, February 9th, Strouse and his collaborator Lee Adams will participate in a talk-back discussion with audience members.
